Straidhavern Sensory Room

29th Aug 2019

Our school now has its own fully interactive sensory room/calming space. The room is used throughout the day by our pupils and can also be accessed by the community for children with special needs/sensory issues.

Our sensory room is a quiet space that employs sensory-controlled techniques to bring about positive effects in individuals who struggle with sensory-overload. There are many benefits to having a sensory room in our school.

It is our aim that this sensory room will;

- Provide a safe supportive and peaceful space for pupils to escape the noise of a busy classroom
- Promote the inclusion of special needs pupils in a mainstream school
- Help pupils with special educational needs to succeed academically by providing them with a safe space
- Relieve pressure on class teachers
- Enable students to experience effective sensory strategies facilitated by trained staff
- Manage students' emotions effectively
- Alleviate and regulate emotional and behavioural difficulties
- Have a knock-on effect on all students' learning, limiting distractions and reducing strain on teaching resources
- Reduce the risk of crisis situations occurring which affect all students

Over the coming months our staff will be trained in the effective use of this sensory environment and we hope that many of our children will benefit from this amazing space.

We also aim to hold sensory sessions outside school hours for our own pupils.

Members of the local community will be able to use the sensory room for sessions with children aged 0-10.

For all enquiries related to using this facility please contact the school secretary, Mrs Burns on 028 9082 5530.
